One of the most commonly used approach to illustrate the role of energy in economic growth consist in tracking the evolution of the energy intensity within the productive sectors of a country. Energy Intensity establishes an economic relation, observed ex post, between physical energy consumption and net output which is measured by the GDP. Such a relation is not causal in itself, but must be seen as the result of many complex mecanisms that determine the quantity of energy needed to satisfy a certain output level. In the first place, the authors use the Divisia index method to assess the changes in energy intensity due to variations in the industrial GDP structure. A comparative analysis showing the evolutionary pattern of industrial energy intensity both in France and in Québec since the early 70's makes it possible to illustrative the significance of structural changes within the industry upon the energy-growth relationship. In the second place, the authors propose a new means to interpret changes in energy intensity of every industrial sector. In doing so, they advocate to make a link between the so-called Economic way to the study of energy intensity and the Technical-economic approach based primarily on relations between energy and physical output. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of this method are looked upon in the view of the evaluation of energy efficiency and diversity policies.
