In addition to climate change as a driver, increasing concerns about the rising cost of hydrocarbon-based transportation fuels and growing concern over energy security are causing many countries to view biofuels as a key element of national energy strategy. Although less efficient than when used for heat, power or manufactured forest products, biofuels may yet prove to be societys choice. In any event, biofuels are currently the alternative that is being actively promoted in many parts of the world. This issue brief focuses on the use of biofuels in the transport sector. Although biofuels are being pursued as a possible alternative to fossil fuels, currently most of the biofuels available for motor fuels are more expensive to produce per unit of energy delivered compared to oil derived from fossil fuels. If fuel costs are to come down, considerable development and government investment will be required to improve manufacturing and distribution technology. [Extracto: Introduction]
