Renewable Energy and the Clean Development Mechanism
2007
---
This brochure has been produced to provide a first introduction to the issue of promoting renewable energy using the Kyoto Protocols Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). It is especially targeted at policymakers in developing countries who want to promote renewable energy and are considering using the CDM to do so. The brochure has five main parts. The first part briefly outlines the potential for and the socio-economic benefits to be had from using renewable energy. The second part highlights the key barriers to broader use of renewable energy sources in developing countries. The third part explains the basic functioning of the CDM. The fourth part discusses the contribution the CDM can make to removing these barriers. The final part sketches out options for policy-makers to promote renewable energy, both by improving general conditions and by making better use of the CDM. The Wuppertal Institute has published this brochure on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety through the German Federal Environment Agency and in cooperation with the UNEP Risø Centre on Energy, Climate and Sustainable Development.
