Although offering an attractive innovation-driven path to sustainable development (SD), ecological modernisation (EM) has been criticised for disregarding the social context. To illustrate the context's importance for innovation, disputes over a hydroelectric project in Costa Rica will be analysed from a reflexive perspective-where social and technical aspects mutually affect each other. Thence, this dissertation analyses alternatives to ameliorate the specific dispute, as well as to aid the inclusion of reflexivity in EM. The argument concludes that whilst technology is important for the environment, it is still not as important as how we manage technology as a society. .
