Compact fluorescent lamps have been throught of as a way for utilities to promote energy conservation. Used as a direct replacement for a standard incandescent bulb, a compact fluorescent bulb will use aproximately 15 to 30 watts of energy while providing equivalent light output of a 60 to 100 watt incandescet bulb. On first impresion, this would seem to be advantageous to utilities as a practical way to promote energy conservation - but is it?. This paper concludes that due to the poor power quality characteristics of the presently available compact fluorescent bulbs, it is not..
