Greenhouse gas (GHG) emission, particulary CO2, have been the subject of increasing concern in recent years. About 33 Gt of CO2 equivalent emissions are emitted anually. A combination of mesures can reduce the level of such emissions quite significantly e.g. CO2 emissions could cut to their 1985 levels if energy efficiency and modern biomass energy current are both pursued vigorosly. As the world's fourth largest energy source, biomass can paly a significant role in reducing GHG emisssions either by direct subsstitution of fossil fuels by modern biomass energy carriers, by the creation of C sinks and the rational exploitation of existing forest..
