Increased efficiency of energy usage is of major importance even to a country like the United Kingdom that is currently self-sufficient in energy. We cannot opt out of the world's energy problems. For the economy as a whole, the scope for conservation is about 100 million tons of coal equivalent (tce) a year - about a third of our current annual energy consumption. It is a low cost, low risk investment, wholly within our control. Economic pricing of energy is a keystone of policy. But obstacles still remain - a historically low priority for conservation, lack of knowledge about the problem and the technical means to overcome it, the fragmentation of the industries supplying energy, conservation services and hardware, the fear of disruption and financial loss from introducing new processes (particulary with innovative technology), all compounded by the effects of recession. The take-up of existing and novel technology in the U.K. has been slow. Consequently, there is an important role for government to work, with industry and associated trade and research associations to overcome these obstacles. The government's main approach is to: a) help identify the problem by analysing the energy usage of industry and the potential for increased energy efficiency. b) promote adoption of innovative technology. c) encourage prudent energy management and voluntary sectoral schemes of energy monitoring and targetting ...(para más información ver documento).
