Photovoltaic systems are playing an increasingly important role in developing countries and have the potential to become a major force for social and economic development. At the present time, the application of PV as a large energy source for urban areas is not cost-effective, but the application in rural areas requiring up to a few kilowatts are proven both technically and economically. Pumping of drinking water, vaccine refrigeration, lighting, education, communications and village electrification are discussed and shown to be reliable and cost-effective. Despite this technical success, dissemination has been rather slow, and the social, political and financial factors which impede widespread dissemination are discussed and some ways forward are proposed..
