This paper addresses the problem of evaluating renewable energy technologies. Current practice is to considerer only one 'dimension' of the technology (ie. its economic worth, technological viability, or environmental consequences) or to collapse a number of dimensions into one (as is usually done in Cost-Benefit Analysis). As a result of work carried out for the Ispra Establishment of the European Commission we suggest that a multidimensional approach is required to fully evaluate renewable (and other) energy technologies. In this way the ultimate decision maker cannot hide behind questionable shadow pricing assumptions but must disclose his/her reasons for choosing between technologies explicity.
