Promotional activity of Solar Cooker is given priority in India's national energy conservation programmes. Studies have shown that adoption of solar cooker households in rather low in spite of its varied advantages. Time, attention, fuel and money saving potentials of solar cooker were compared with conventional cooking modes. Typical rural meal of Gujarat was prepared in solar cooker and two woodburning cookstoves, viz., Traditional Rural Stove and improve Junagadh Stove. Typical urban meal was prepared in solar cooker and conventional cookstoves of kerosene and coal respectively. Nutritive value of solar cooked foods was compared with conventionally cooked foods. In addition, acceptability of solar cooked food was studied against conventionally cooked foods. The findings revealed that solar cooker conserves conventional cooking fuel to a considerable extend. Solar cookers, if adopted in daily cooking in urban and rural households, can lead to conventional energy resource conservation in domestic sector. Solar cooking is superior to conventional modes of cooking in terms of its potential to conserve time, attention, and money outlay on cooking fuelds. Nutrient retention was seen to be more in solar cooked food than in conventionally cooked food. Solar cooked food was found to be safe for consumption. Constraints to the adoption of solar cooker in daily cooking and some strategies to promote its use are discussed.
