Energy conservation through enhanced efficiency in its utilization is mainly responsible for the relative well being of the present days after the 1974 oil embargo. Conservation means, of course, to increase energy productivity in order to reduce the amount of energy required to maintain a certain level of comfort, production, and services. Basic scientific principes have been properly considered and applied. Substantial progress has been made in areas such as residential, large buildings, windows performance, appliances, space conditioner equipments, transportation, industry, lighting, and others. In many countries the Gross National Product is no longer linked to the rate of use of energy and there are reasons to believe this is not only the case of the more industrialized countries, but that this decoupling can also be achieved in many developing countries. The measures taken have been greatly rewarding and the potential for conservation in the future is still more promising. As a result, it is expected that a substantial reduction in the amount of energy needed for practically all purposes can be reached in the near future. In particular it is expected that improved productivity and energy efficiency will allow the rate of industrial production to grow much faster than the rate of energy needed for that production...
