It is the policy of the Spanish Government as stated in the Energy Plan, to rely on diversified sources of energy, minimizing at the same time the dependency on oil. Diversification in the peninsula means chielfly increasing the contribution of nuclear, coal and hydro power, with major emphasis placed in hydro and coal. Of different nature is the problem to provide diversified sources of energy to the Canary and Balearic Islands, where the distribution grid is not connected to the peninsula. Diversification to oil cannot be provided by nuclear due to the minimun viable plant sizes or by hydro due to lack of resources. Herebelow, a concept of proven design is described, which can provide an alternate for diversified energy at competitive costs. This concept makes use of the renewal energy sources as solar and urban wastes as well as of coal, showing competitive costs for sizes in the range of 40 Mwe.. INTRODUCTION. GENERAL FEATURES OF THE DESIGN. ECONOMIC STUDIES. Major assumptions. Description of the evaluation. CONCLUSIONS.
