The development of general purpose computer program using an Expert System Approach to lighting and thermal design of Passive Solar Buildings is described. The program uses exogenuous data such as climatic and micro-climatic conditions, as well as prevalent architectural and construction practice, to develop optimal design criteria. Knowledge based constraints such as local architectural preferences, prevalent living practices, local customs and behavioral patterns are treated as interacrive operators on the decision path. Rule of thumb principles can be either treated as intermediary inputs or tested through successive interactive iterations. The topological structure of the engineering, algorithms and decision paths es described, and the overall program flowchart is presented. At each stage in the decision path, the user can view the impact of his/her progression in the design process through graphical aids provided by the display section of the program. The use of the program is demonstrated through a lighting design exercise. The impact of daylighting mode, artificial lighting mode, and combined modes on light levels in a 3-dimensional space is graphically displayed.. ABSTRACT. INTRODUCTION. THE PROGRAM DESCRIPTION.
