The space heating or cooling demands and the comfort level given by the passive structure (envelope) are directly dependent on indoor temperature variations. The modal method shows that a building can be easily represented with a good precision by a small number of parameters. Namely, it gives the principal time constant of the thermal structure which caracterizes with a good approximation the building thermal capacitance. From this result, it is possible to elaborate heuristic model on the indoor temperature evolution. Its integration permits to evaluate the space energy demands and the deviation between the actual indoor temperature and the set point. But the model leads to more fundamental results detailed here under. A dimensional analysis of the heuristic model and correlations with the principal parameters or the dimensionless groups give us a simple load calculation method. It defines the origin and the signification of the traditional parameters which are degreedays heat loss coefficient, equivalent, south area, etc. ... and makes it complete by taking into account the dynamic aspect of the thermal behaviour of the building through the building time constant. Thus we have obtained a manual load calculation method in which one all the physical phenomenon can be explained and taken into account..
