A small enclosure was built to study the effect of a horizontal vaffle on the interaction between radiation and natural convection heat transfer across and enclosure. One vertical enclosure wall was heated and the other cooled while top and bottom walls were insulated.Determining the energy conservation effect of venetian blinds next to or between window panes represent one application of the fundamental heat transfer knowledge gained from this study. Four (4) combinations of baffle surface emissivity (0.1 and 0.9) and orientation relative to enclosure walls (90 and 45 degrees) were tested for each of two enclosure wall emissivities (0.1 and 0.9) over a Grashoff number range of 5x10 4 to 2x10 6. The Grashoff number was computed using the temperature difference and distance between the vertical walls of the enclosure. For each combination of enclosure wall emissivity and Grashoff number, all four baffle configurations were tested at a fixed heat flux supplied to the warmer enclosure wall. Heat transfer losses from the enclosure were calculated and subtracted from the total power supplied to the warm wall of the enclosure, yielding the total heat transfer between vertical walls of the enclosure. The streamlines were made visible by smoke injection and their patterns were recorded both on videotape and in still photographs. The natural convection flow was also modelled numerically with a finite element code and the streamlines and isotherms from that model plotted. (Para más información ver documento). INTRODUCTION.
