This paper describes the wave-energy utilization R D program which is under way at Lisbon Technical University jointly with National Engineering Laboratory of Ministry of Industry (LNETI). The energy extracting device which is being developed is a botton standing oscillating-water-column device. It is equiped with a special type of self-rectifying air turbine which allows for the air flow rate through the turbine to be controlled independently of the air-pressure in the chamber. This type of phase control allows a reduction of the chamber size for the same amount of extracted energy, and increases the system's adaptability to the instantaneous sea state and tidal level. The electrical energy is produced by an asynchronous generator controlled by an oversyndhronous electronic cascade. This allows the direct coupling of the generator, operating at variable speed, to the supply grid at constant frequency. The whole system is controlled by a in-board microcomputer using local instantaneous wave and chamber air-pressure data. Previous work developed in Lisbon in the areas of wave power characterization, hydrodynamics of the OWC device, phase controlled turbine, electrical equipment and control methodology is summarized..
