In 1984, Mechanical and Energy Engineering Department (MESAB) of Marmara Research Institute (MRI) initiated a project to investigate the wind energy utilization options in Turkey. Wind research, being a new research topic for MESAB, has proceeded with literature survey and potential assessment studies. TÜGAN Wind Turbine Test Site is being prepared since mid 1985. Wind Data collected by a mechanical anmograph at the site over one year is evaluated to determine the wind characteristics. In this paper, a short description of the site and the equipment are given. Diurnal, seasonal and annual means and variations about the means are calculated. The frequency distribution of the wind speed and the power curve of a commercial 55 KW wind turbine are used to determine the amount of electricity which could be produced.
