The present state-of-the-art is reviewed for single and polycrystal homojunction, polycrystal heterojunction and for amorphous solar cell devices. The trend in device performance (efficiency and life expectancy) is discussed, typical device production steps are analysed. A review of the theoretical performance analysis based on carrier transport theory is given with indication of limit device performance and suggestions for design improvement to minimize typical losses are given.
