The photoionization of molecules in micelles and vesicles is being studied to determine the structural effects in such organized molecular assemblies on the photoionization process and to optimize net charge separation as a means to store light energy. The internal and surface structure of micelles and the controlled modification of this structure are important factors for achieving this goal. To do this, we have pioneered the use of a new approach for studying micellar structure called electron spin echo modulation (ESEM) spectrometry. This allows determination of the surroundings of a paramagnetic probe out to about 0.6 nm from it. For example, the probe location with respects to surfactant chains and with respect to the micelle surface can be determined. By using specific deuteration of the micellar structure the location of specific parts of the micellar structure respective to a spin probe can be found. ESEM and electron spin (ESR) spectra of the photogenerated N,N,N',N' -tetramethylbenzidine cation radical (TMB+) in frozen micellar solutions have been studied. The effects of micelle surface modification by added salt, changing the counterion and adding 1-butanol as a cosurfactant have also been studied. It is found that the intrinsic charge separation is optimized for solutes in cationic micelles and for anionic micelles with an optimal concentration of added salt or cosurfactant. INTRODUCTION.
