Pyrolysis and hydropyrolysis at low temperature, 600 oC, of a Spanish subbituminous coal (68.1. SUMMARY. C, daf) were compared in order to determine differences in the product composition. Pyrolysis was carried out under helium (0.1 MPa) in an horizontal fixed-bed reactor with heating rate of 7 oC/minute. Hydropyrolysis was done under hydrogen (3 MPa) in a fixed-bed gas-swept reactor with heating rate 10 oC/minute. Gas and water yields were similar in both cases. Gases from hydropyrolysis have higher methane content and lower CO2 content and therefore higher heating power. Tars from both techniques have similar elemental analyses but structural differences can be observed by FTIR, 1H NMR and gas chromatography. Hydropyrolysis yielded more tars than pyrolysis. Chars have analogous elemental and heating power. Total sulfur content of chars decreased by 27. INTRODUCTION. and 50. EXPERIMENTAL. respectively, in relation with the parent coal. This fact indicates hydropyrolysis is more effective for desulfurization than conventional pyrolysis. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION. Product yields. Characterization of tars. Characterization of chars.
