Coal gasification processes currently under development employ a variety of reactor types including fixed, fluidized and entrained beds. The fluidized bed gasifier has a relatively uniform bed temperature due to its good mixing characteristics. Ths strong agitation of the bed material is responsible for the high rate of heat transfer. Considering that col gasification is a delicate balance between exothermic combustion reactions and endothermic gasification reactions, it provides a distinct processing advantage. The properties of coal to be treated determine the characteristics of the gasifier and associated equipment to be used. The caking properties and ash characteristics of bituminous coals can cause the coal to agglomerate and the ash to sinter on heating. In fluidized bed units agglomerates may either block the grid or lead to defluidization simply because of their size. This can be overcome if the circulation of the solids in the bed is increased by using a central draught tube. In the INCAR (Instituto Nacional del Carbón y sus Derivados) gasifier coal is introduced pneumatically into the gasifier below the bottom of the draught tube by the central gas supply. The coal feed and recycled char up to 200 times the coal feed rate are mixed inside the draught tube and carried upward pneumatically in dilute phase. The recirculation and the fast devolatilization and oxidation of the solids in the draught tube prevent the agglomeration of the caking coals. ABSTRACT. INTRODUCTION. COAL GASIFICATION METHODS.
