For a deeper knowledge of the anaerobic digestion process of alpechín (olive oil mill wastewater), the maximum specific growth rate, the conversion factor of biomass into biogas, and the bacterial biomass duplication time have been determined, making use of the finetic model of Maly. This is applicable to digesters operating in discontinuous mode, in the exponential growth phase of the biomass. The mathematical expression of the kinetic model is given by the equation: Ln G = /û t + Ln K Bo where G= total biogas production at time t., /û= maximum specific growth rate, K= conversion factor of biomass into biogas, Bo= initial biomass. Average generation time or the time neccesary to double the biomass is given by the expression: T = Ln 2 / /û. This work describes the results obtained from the application of the kinetic model to two anaerobic digestion units, each of one litre capacity which are started up with biomass previously adapted to alpechín digestion.
