This paper deals with the studies which are being carried out at our Department in the field of anaerobic digestion, as both biogas production and wastewater treatment process. Results are reported on low temperature anaerobic treatment of piggery wastes in conventional stirred tank digesters. It appears that, in the 25oC operating digesters, the performance is alomost the same of those obtained in the mesophilic range of operation. Different star-up procedures of high-rate reactors (anaerobic filter, UASB) are tested in order to minimize such a step when applied to animal (pig manure) and industrial wastes (distillery slops ans potato-starch wastewater). Data are provided and a comparison is made, suggesting criteria to select a suitable starp-up of such reactors. An up-flow expanded-bed anaerobic reactor is presented, including bacteria attachment on polyurethane foam. Data are reported on the start-up procedure as well as on its performance, while early results are very promising. Finally, results of the biogas production and COD removal of a 2-m3, 6-meter high anaerobic filter installed in a pig farm, are discussed. INTRODUCTION. MATERIALS AND METHODS.
