This work describes the utilization of three two liter total volume up-flow anaerobic filters, containing polyurethane foam (FA filter), expanded clay (FB filter) and polyurethane net (FC filter), as support materials. The operation was carried at 35 oC and loading rates varied from 2 to 12 kg COD m-3 day -1. By increasing the loading rates from 2 to 8 kg COD m-3 day-1,the COD conversion decreased from 62 to 51. INTRODUCTION. (FB) and from 87 to 54. MATERIALS AND METHODS. (FC). Methane production reached 1.4 (FB) and 1.5 (FC) 1 CH4 1-1 total volume of reactor by day at a loading rate of 8 kg COD m-3 day-1, FA filter only achieved a production of 0.6 1 CH4 1-1 day-1. With the filter containing the polythylene net it was possible, at 12 Kg COD m-3 day-1 loading rate, to achieve a production of 2.1 1 CH4 1-1 total volume of reactor by day. The others showed clogging problems. Inoculum and substrate. Analytical methods. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION. CONCLUSIONS. REFERENCES.
