The cotton stalk most abundant in Cukurova region has been treated thermochemically for increasing anaerobic biodegradability. Aqueous suspensions of cotton stalk (20. ABSTRACT. by weight) have been treated at yhe temperature of 200,250, and 300oC in a high pressure autoclave with acetic acid (10. INTRODUCTION. by weight of solid) for one hour. After treatment, reaction mixtures have been separated into solid and aqueous layers. The aqueous layers containing considerable amount of organic compounds dissolved in water have been subjected to anaerobic biodegradation at 37oC in lab-sacle digesters. During fermentation period BOD5 and COD values with time have been determined. It can be concluded that the aqueous layer obtained from the liquefaction of agricultural solid wastes would be digested anaerobically for methane production and waste water treatment.
