The research carried out on the ethanol production from lignocellulosic materials is presented. The main results obtained in various relevant aspects to improve the feasibility of the whole process are reported. The pretreatment of wheat straw with dilute sulfuric acid produces the hydrolysis of the hemicellulosic fraction and enhances the cellulose hydrolysis has been studied and a model is proposed. Also, the production of cellulases by Trichoderma reseei QM-9414 is reported. Ethanol fermentation is performed in a continuous packed-bed reactor with immobilized yeast cells in carrageenan beads. The gel beads are characterized and continuous fermentation results are given. Finally, a process for ethanol-water separation by a non-conventional method based on liquid-liquid extraction is studied. SUMMARY. FIGURES. TABLES.
