The results of an agro-industrial research, started back in 1981, on sweet sorghum cultivation in Emilia-Romagna Region and on its conversion to ethanol are discussed here. The research work is organized in five stages: a) agronomic tests of comparision among several varieties of sweet sorghum, different row spacings, different fertilization and irrigation methods; b) tests of mechanized harvesting and several sorts of storage; c) conversion to ethanol; d) salvage and use of the bagasse and stillage energy content, respectively by means of combustion and anaerobic fermentation with biogas production; e) energy balance calculation. The final results show that sweet sorghum is an high-energy crop, most suitable for ethanol production. The better varieties among those tested are able to produce about 60-65 ql./Ha of carbohydrates; homever a breeding project, in progress since a few years, shortly will raise the production to 80-100 ql./Ha. SWEET SORGHUM. THE RESULTS OF A 5 YEAR AGRONOMIC TEST IN EMILIA-ROMAGNA. HARVESTING, STORAGE AND BY-PRODUCTS USE. CONCLUSIONS.
