An extracellular cellulase which was very active in solubilizing the highly hydrogen bond ordered (crystalline) cellulose in cotton fibre was found in a culture filtrate of the anaerobic fungus Neocallimastix frontalis. The fungus was isolated from the rumen of a sheep. The cellulase was several times more active in solubilizing cotton fibre per unit of endo-1, 4-B-glucanase then the cellulase of the aerobic fungus Trichoderma reesei mutant strain C30, which is one of the most active cellulases of N. frontails contains a cellobiohydrolase that acts synergistically with the endo-1, 4-B-glucanase and B-glucosidase to solubilize crystalline cellulose.
