Emergent aquatic plants such as cattail (Typha spp.), because of their high productivity, can constitute a very promising way to remove wastewater nutrients. Otherwise, their belowground rhizome system, rich in easily fermentable carbohydrates can be an interesting energy sources. For a period of six months (July-January), the purification ability of an experimental culture of Typha latifolia L. growing in a simulated secondary effluent of a municipal sewage treatment plant has been studied throught periodical water analyses of pH, conductivity, nitrogen and phosphates. The obtained results show a high efficiency of the plants in the removal of water nitrogen, even in winter. The crop productivity and its content in easily fermentable carbohydrates have been estimated, obtaining yields in sugars and starch about 22 t/ha for shoots and 41 t/ha for rhizomes. SUMMARY. INTRODUCTION. GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION AND DESCRIPTION OF THE PLANT. DESCRIPTION OF THE EXPERIMENTAL CONDITIONS. CHEMICAL EVOLUTION IN THE WASTEWATER. CROP PRODUCTIVITY. SUGAR CONTENT IN VEGETAL TISSUES. CONCLUSIONS. REFERENCES.
