Eucalyptus species have been extensively planted in different parts of the world for utilization as a fiber source. In Portugal, plantations of eucalyptus globulus labill. ssp. globulus provide the country's pulp industry with its more important pulpwood source. Eucalyptus globulus labill. is a fast-growing species, used in short rotation forestry, and as such can be also thought as potential biomass for energy, specially in combined energy and fiber plantations. Various estimates of the magnitude of aboveground biomass are presented for different locations in Portugal, covering the distribution area of the species in this country. Biomass and nutrient contents of wood (pulp merchantable bole), bark, topwood, branches and leaves in a sampling of fourty trees were determined. An orthogonal factorial desing was used providing the following four fold classification: 4 sites x 2 plots x 5 trees x 5 levels. Reported dry matter production ranged from 145.9 t/ha to 80.2 t/ha. Considering the componnents separately we found: 102.6 t/ha to 55.0 (wood); 14,2 t/ha to 7.4 t/ha (bark); 12.3 t/ha to 2.8 t/ha (topwood); 8.0 t/ha to 5.0 t/ha (branches); 8.8 t/ha to 6.0 t/ha (leaves) An assessment of nutrient removal is made for different utilization strategies including whole-tree utilization. In this case it is shown that it reached 239.0 Kg/ha for N, 30.5 Kg/ha for P, 148.8 Kg/ha for F, 425.8 Kg/ha for Ca, 234.1 Kg/ha for Mg, 205.3 Kg/ha for Mn and 167.7 Kg/ha for Na. INTRODUCTION.
