The effect of several parameters on the productivity of the nitrogen-fixing blue-green alga Anabaena strain ATCC 33047 in outdoor semicontinuous culture has been investigated. In early Autumn (irradiance, 10 MJ m-2 day-1) 15 cm deep cultures with a cell density of 1.5 mg (ch1) 1-1 showed maximal productivity (14 g (dry weight) m-2 day-1)in the presence of 50 mM NaHCO3 without co2 supply. In summer, at an irradiance of 22 MJ m-2 day-1, optimal values for depth and cell density were 10 cm and 2 mg (ch1) 1-1 respectively, conditions that resulted in a productivity of 26 g (dry weight) m-2 day-1 in the presence of 50 mM NaHCO3 with a CO2 supply of 1-1.5 mol m-2 day-1. The addition of either combined nitrogen (10 mM KNO3) or dinitrogen from aid (150 1 m-2 day-1) resulted in only a slight increase in productivity. ABSTRACT. INTRODUCTION. MATERIALS AND METHODS.
