In many regions of the world, the production of aquatic biomass is so high that biomass-based fuels can more than fulfill the energy needs of those regions. Amongst the fastest growing aquatic biomass, and therefore amongst the most attractive sources of renewable energy, are aquatic weeds. In absence of proper methods of utilization, the weeds cause enormous harm to the water resources, in terms of quantity as well as quality. The weeds also cause major hindrance in agricultural production. By utilising the weeds as energy source these negative impacts can be prevented to a great extent while generating clean and valuable energy. In this review an attempt has been made to describe aquatic biomass in the perspective of the overall biomass resources of the world. The growth potential of the aquatic biomass and its impact on the world. The growth potential of the aquatic biomass and its impact on the environment in the context of utilisation as a management option has been briefly reviewed. Anaerobic digestion has been discussed as the technology most appropriate for producing energy from aquatic biomass. In the concluding portion of the review, salient features of research and development efforts vested so far in utilising aquatic biomass are presented.
