The finest living collectors of energy are green plants. The biomass produced by plants, be they terrestial or aquatic, has become one of our best sources of renewable energy. The latest development in both research and applied technology are discussed for such biomass feedstocks as grasses, tree crops, root crops, hydrocarbon plants, and fresh and salt water aquatic plants. The tropical grasses such as Pinus, Eucalyptus, Casurina, Melaleuca, and Leucaena appear to have received major attention as leading sources of biomass feedstock. The harvest, transport, conversion, and utilization of this biomass to energy products are discussed with examples of latest developments in direct combustion, pyrolysis, gasification, aerobic and anaerobic fermentation, liquefaction, and production of chemicals from the biomass.
