The monograph reviews the rational use of energy in food production i.e. on the farm excluding the food processing industries. The utilisation of commercial and non-commercial energy is examined including the conservation of energy in farm buildings and energy savings by the use of machinery and equipment. Economical use of energy in the form of fertilizers and pesticides is also considered. Attention is given to the utilization of new and renewable sources of energy and agricultural by-product fuels e.g. biomas, straw, wood/charcoal, methanol, ethanol, anaerobic digestion of organic matter and vegetable oil. Use of labour and new mechanisation are considered as well as group schemes including rural energy supply co-operatives. The case studies for the Republic of China and Hungary provide specific information of the rational use of energy in agriculture in those countries. INTRODUCTION. GENERAL REMARKS.
