The need for various levels of energy efficient motors continues to grow, driven by the cost of power, utility rebate incentives and the National Energy Act of 1992. There is also growing need to reassess existing standards, guidelines and codes, many of which were developed many years ago under a different set of circumstances. Current technologies coupled with user needs, are in many cases grossly different from those of past decades. This becomes even more apparent, in a global economy, when comparing the National Electrical Manufacturers Association(NEMA) standards to those of international Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). This paper focuses on the advantages of adopting the heretofore proven IEC equivalent standard pertaining to motor starting current and torque, while reaping the benefits of premium efficiency. This paper presents the new proposed design E motor features along with the existing desing A and B options.
