Cogeneration technology nowadays is not only an ideal system for the rational use of energy but is also a strategic investment that will allow various parts of Spanish industry to face the challenge of the European single market in conditions of acceptable competitiveness. These important advantages can be added to the favourable situation existing in Spain since its electricity generating capacity must be increased over the short term. These considerations, together with a constantly growing concern to protect the environment, have given rise to a significant to see how virtually all the electricity utilities in Spain are taking part in some of these new cogeneration projects since they fit in well with some of the other new targets the electricity sector has set, essentially in terms of diversification, image and customer service. There follows a brief summary of the recent history of cogeneration in Spain, its current situation and its utilization prospects fot the near future. Comments are also given on aspects related to the legislation and funding system which IDAE porposes for carrying out this type of project.
