Rising levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) during this century and the next may have significant direct effects on climate and vegetation. This volume will investigate some of the possible impacts of the resulting changes in climate and vegetation on human health and welfare. This chapter will (1) briefly review the changes in atmospheric CO2 that have occurred since 1850 and the projections for CO2 increases in the future, (2) summarize the known historic and projected future climate changes in the context of increasing CO2 and the means by which climate responses to CO2 are studied and (3) describe vegetation response in the context of climate changes and the global carbon cycle. INTRODUCTION AND OVERVIEW. CARBON DIOXIDE LEVELS. Historic trends in atmospheric CO2 concentrations. Future trends in atmospheric CO2 concentrations. EFFECTS OF CO2 ON WEATHER AND CLIMATE. CO2 and global warming. Empirical studies of past climate changes. Climate modeling. VEGETATION RESPONSES TO INCREASED CO2.
