Characterization of information requirements for studies of CO2 effects : water resources, agriculture, fisheries, forests and human health. Objectives of the current study of indirect effects. DOE/ER.

This report discusses the potential indirect effects of changes in climate and vegetation response resulting from increased levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. There are currently many uncertainties in the scientific data base related to CO2, thus it is not possible, at this time, to quantify the indirect effects of CO2 increase. The current urgent requirements are definitions of the data and research to eventually quantify these effects. The objectives of these study were (1) to characterize and define the information required from other CO2 research programs and (2) to efficiently use this information, when it becomes available, to determine the information and research requirements within the fields in which indirect effects may occur. This study is not an impact analysis and does not review methodology for impact studies. The Scope Report (Kates et al. 1985) is a good review of the state-of-the-art methodologies for doing impact assessment. BACKGROUND. Atmospheric carbon dioxide. Definition of indirect effects. Interrelationship between the carbon cycle and CO2 induced direct and indirect effects. Status of direct effects knowledge. Previous studies related to indirect effects. APPROACH FOR THE CURRENT STUDY. THE CURRENT STUDY. ORGANIZATION OF THE REPORT. REFERENCES.
