A major part of the Spanish coal resources correspond to subbituminous and lignite coal with ash (30-60 percent) and high sulphur (1-7 percent) content. The use of these coals in conventional combustion processes for power and industrial plants implies strong environmental impact or very high economic investment in flue gas desulphurization to meet the every day more restrictive environmental regulations. The better chance for being able to use these coals as fuel in the future is to develop clean combustion systems, specifically fluidized bed combustion units for both, industrial use and power generation. This paper pays attention to the industrial and power fluidized bed combustion boilers to use Spanish low rank coals with high ash/high sulphur. Different tests have been carried out for the feedstocks (Spanish coal and limestone) characterization within a research and development program covering the fluidized combustion process, its environmental impact, by products use and structural materials investigation. Some of the results corresponding to the characterization of the different sub-bituminous and lignite coals are shown in this paper. The main fluidized bed boiler design features have been mentioned. Also, the representative projects within the circulating and the pressurized fluidized bed technology under execution in Spain have been described. These projects, most of them classified as demonstration plants, are part of technological co-development programs, that will allow the Spanish manufacturers to participate in the design and growth of this technology, which in view of the large reserves of low rank coals in Spain, is called to play a relevant role in the near future..
