Steady state engine mapping in extended by the creation of maps in the domains of torque and speed derivates. The mapping model in this instance was calibrated from chassis dynamometer tests on manual and automatic transmission vehicles. Real time correction for emissions sampling delays and analyser responses by a mini computer, and development of weighting techniques are important steps in the success of the transient mapping method. It is shown that the model improves the explained variance of 2Hz fuel rates by 10 per cent and emissions by 45 per cent compared with steady state mapping and single equation models.
