The paper discusses the past and future projected growth in car fleet size and its impact on energy, environmental social and planning issues. In particular cars are arguably the largest single source of global pollutants including CO2, photochemical and acid emissions. Solutions to the problem of pollution are discussed including higher fuel efficiency, alterantive fuels, modal shifts towards public transport and a reduction in the source generators of transport movements. The paper concludes that major changes are now urgently required to avert serious perhaps insoluble, energy and environment problems in the future.
