Staggered working hours have the potential to alleviate the excessive demands made on the transport infrastructure during the morning and afternoon peak hours. A more uniform demand profile would lead to a decrease in peak traffic densities and a resultant increase in traffic speed. This paper uses a traffic speed model sensitive to changes in traffic activity to calculate the effect of staggered working hours on the average duration of commuter trips. The cases of discrete and continous distributions of departure times are considered and an optimisation process is outlined.
