The demand for lighting equipment in the Polish market (38 million people) before 1989 was supplied mainly by polish products. The production of light sources (incandescent, fluorescent and high intensity discharge lamps), luminaires for domestic commercial and industrial lighting was centrally planned with a preference for industrial and commercial lighting. The transformation from a centrally planned economy has created a new situation in the Polish market place for lighting technologies. With the privatisation programme and the growth of small businesses a new demand for modern efficient lighting has developed. the futur perspective for the implementation of modern energy saving lighting technologies will very much depend on government energy, privatisation, legal and fiscal policies. In the short term a buoyant market is developping, being driven by a desire for modern aesthetically pleasing lighting equipment. SUMMARY. A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE LIGHTING SECTOR IN POLAND UNTIL 1989.
