In Sweden is an ongoing national programme to develop and commercialize new energy-efficient systems, processes and products in buildings, industry and transport. Within this programme a number of projects concerning lighting and ventilation of public and commercial buildings have been carried out. During the next five years some ECU 20 millions (SEK 200 M) of the total programme budget of ECU 96 millions will be allocated to these sectors. Savings in the range of 50 to 70 percent have typically been achieved in retrofit projects for lighting. To stimulate the introduction of well designed lighting installations, including efficient HF- ballasted luminaires with adequate lighting control, special lighting projects have been iniciated for three different kinds of premises, i.e. offices, hospitals, and schools. Based on evaluations of good examples, new standards have been set which will be implemented in many new and retrofit lighting installations spread over the country. In a separate project HF, electronic ballasts have been procured in a central contract with a ballast manufacturer from which company ballast can be ordered individually by the purchasers on given terms. Within this project, as a part of the project, the contractor has also built pilot installations of a new lighting control system based on an intelligent microchip integrated in the ballast electronics.
