Daylight and architecture have for centuries been inextricably linked, by both aesthetic and functional concerns. There is a resurgence of interest in this field generated by issues such visual comfort, energy efficiency and computer simulation. New reserch of daylighting in architecture, as well as the collection and evaluation of existing knowledge, is introduced in this paper. The collation of this information into one document by a team of European experts provides the design team and building researchers with a state-of-the art assessment. The resutant book is entitled Daylighting in Architecture : a European Reference Book. ABSTRACT. INTRODUCTION. The scope of the book. Architectural aspects. Historical background. Daylighting in the 20th Century. Environmental issues. Systems and components. Human factors and controls. Educating architects and engineers. DAYLIGHTING EVOLUTION AND ANALYSIS.
