Israel's energy economy relies almost exclusively on imported fossil fuels, specially oil. One of the major goals of Israel's energy policy is to reduce dependence on imported fuels. Energy conservation can help reduce this dependence. It can also slow down the growth rate of installed capacity and reduce energy-related environmental effects. At the national level, promotion and activities related to energy conservation are carried out by the Division of Energy Conservation at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure. These activities include: - Technical consulting and guidance, -education, -initiation of legislation and regulations, -providing incentives for energy conservation measures. One of the units at the Division of Energy Conservation promotes energy conservation in buildings: residential, public and industrial. The present paper describes the methods used by this unit towards reducing electricity consumption in lighting. BACKGROUND. ISRAEL'S ENERGY ECONOMY - OVERVIEW. ENERGY CONSERVATION IN LIGHTING. Incentives for improving efficiency in existing lighting systems. Incentives for installation of photo-voltaic lighting systems. Techno-economical consulting. Education and information.
