In many buildings lighting consumes a substantial amount of energy and accounts for a large part of the services cost. In the UK there is a programme of information transfer funded by the Energy Efficiency Office, called the Best Practice programme, which offers impartial guidance on how to achieve energy efficiency in buildings, including the use of ligthing. Tools used by the Best Practice programme include complementary outputs funded by the European Commission's Thermie programme. BRECSU has produced four maxibrochures on energy efficient lighting on behalf of DGXVII of the European Commission. It is not always easy to identify the key decision taker, let alone to convince them to invest in energy efficient lighting. In the UK a relatively large proportion of the new office floor space was, however, fitted with one or more energy efficient lighting technologies in 1992. There is still some way to go before all designers advise their clients to adopt energy efficiency lighting practices. Similarly numbers of building clients are yet to be convinced to adopt their designers' recommendations to implement energy efficiency practices.
