Biodiésel in the EU and in development countries
2006
Although the European biofuels market has become the most advanced in the world, the 2% biofuels target set by EC Directive 2003/30 for 2005 has not yet been reached by most EU Member States. Those countries that achieved higher biofuels market shares typically had put in place a favourable legislative framework, which also seems to be the case in non-EU countries with a biodiesel industry. A comparison of the situation for biodiesel across the world suggests that the issues and challenges related to expanding biofuels markets are similar across the globe, and that optimal solutions will need to be found in common.
