The scarcity of drinking water is a severe problem for the major part of the rural population in the northeastern region of Brazil. The people suffer under poor hygiene and health conditions. That, in turn, promotes migration to city slums.15 PVP systems were installed in small rural communities for delivering potable water from wells up to 80 m in depth. All pumps have been in operation several years with no problems, are well-accepted by the people and have proven both economically viable and superior performance over other waterpumping options.
