This paper presents a discussion of the utility of employing water quality models as analytical tools for water quality managers. The emphasis is on instream assimilation, its dynamic and complex processes and its central role in water quality management. Modelling theory is presented and six water quality models are applied to the North Saskatchewan and Highwood Rivers of Alberta, Canada.
